Infrastructure Sustainability Pilot Project
Building sustainable energy infrastructure
A brighter future is a sustainable future, and sustainability is at the heart of our corporate strategy as we transition towards distributed, smarter energy solutions.
Our mission is to accelerate the decarbonisation of the energy sector, driving positive change for our customers, communities, and the environment.
To ensure we hold ourselves accountable and maintain transparency with our stakeholders, we have become a member of the he Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia, a purpose-led, member-based organisation that operates in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand.
Its mission is to promote sustainability outcomes in infrastructure through advocacy, education, and asset rating schemes. Our membership aligns with our goal of driving sustainability and advancing our environmental initiatives.
IS Rating Scheme
The IS Rating Scheme (IS) is Australia and New Zealand’s only comprehensive rating system for evaluating economic, social, and environmental performance of infrastructure across the planning, design, construction and operational phases of infrastructure assets.
The scheme can assess the sustainability performance of infrastructure at the individual assets level, for portfolios or networks, or even at a regional scale.
In delivering on our sustainability commitments, the business has selected the Grantham Farm Zone Substation Project as its first IS Design and As-Built Rating Pilot Project.
Sustainability by design is critical for achieving long-term environmental and economic goals. By integrating sustainability into the design process, we ensure that our solutions are not only environmentally friendly but also cost-effective over the entire life cycle. This approach encourages a holistic view of infrastructure, from initial design to decommissioning, which helps us find opportunities for cost savings and value optimisation.
By adopting a sustainability-focused design process, we use partnerships and innovative approaches that enhance the value we deliver to our customers and stakeholders. This strategic emphasis on sustainability not only fulfills our environmental commitments but also creates opportunities for increased efficiency and long-term financial benefits.
Our Sustainability Targets
We have set the following sustainability targets to guide our Grantham Farm Zone Substation project and ensure meaningful progress towards our overarching corporate sustainability goals.
Sustainable design
Obtain an IS Rating under IS Essentials for Design and As Built phases.
Energy and carbon emissions
Identify and implement energy and carbon emissions reduction opportunities from the verified Base Case footprint, across the asset life (construction and operations). This will include:
- 30% reduction of GHG emissions attributed to steel (reinforcement steel) used during construction.
- 30% reduction of GHG emissions attributed concrete used during construction.
- Use of solar panels during operations.
Water management
Identify and implement water management impact reductions from the verified Base Case footprint, across the asset life (construction). This may include water use reduction, extending the Sydney Water mains into the construction site, etc.
Materials
Identify and implement materials life cycle impact reductions from the verified Base Case footprint, across the asset life (construction and operations). See energy and carbon emissions targets.
Climate resilience
Adaptation options to treat all extreme and high priority direct and indirect climate change risks are identified, assessed and appropriate measures implemented.
Develop a Resilience Plan to prioritise treatment options.
Resource recovery
Increase the percentage of waste diverted from landfill. This may include:
- During construction: 80% of waste diverted from landfill.
- During operations 90% of waste diverted from landfill
Biodiversity
Enhance ecological value so that a positive net habitat gain is achieved.
Community health and wellbeing
Implement initiatives to contribute positively to society or the environment for two priority community issues. This may include:
Support local employment, and community events with council areas.
Sustainable procurement
Material supplier contracts specify sustainability requirements and performance is monitored.
Diversity and inclusion
Establish effective social partnerships where practicable to enhance long-term community benefits and social legacy including employment and training.
